On Sunday 8th March, Carmarthen 2XI travelled to Cardiff to play Cardiff Uni's 5XI in their re-arranged league match.
Carrying confidence from their run of wins, Carmarthen started strong, with midfielders Lili Church and Mirain Morgan distributing the ball out wide brilliantly to wing backs Rhian Moremon, Anna Knuckles, Tirion Evans and Kate Howell who were then able to drive to the back line and cross into the 'D'.
Carmarthen gained themselves a short corner where a slip to Kate Howell allowed her to tuck home Carmarthen's first goal. Shortly after, a second Carmarthen short corner, a second slip to Howell and second goal!
Carmarthen kept the pressure on Cardiff, with opportunities coming thick and fast for forwards Siriol Richards, Charlotte Harries, Bethany James and Ffion Raymond. It wasn't long before Carmarthen earned yet another short corner. This time a strike from Richards at the top of the 'D' found the backboard, 3-0!
Tired legs for Carmarthen in the last 10minutes of the first half allowed Cardiff to get a quick break, ending in a goal, 3-1.
Another break from Cardiff followed but a massive effort from the whole team to get back and defend slowed the play down, with some scrappy play in front of goal, an unlucky 'foot' call on the line gave Cardiff a penalty flick which was converted to finish the half 3-2.
Carmarthen came out determined for the second half. It wasn't long before the team were rewarded for their efforts, with a one-on-one for Richards against the Cardiff goalkeeper, a quick turn, a shot and another goal, 4-2.
A spell of good play and long balls from Cardiff put Carmarthen's defenders, Leia Thomas, Ellie Routley, Ffion Dart and Caitlin Marshall under pressure but, with a couple of stunning saves from goalkeeper Lowri Davies, Cardiff's efforts proved unfruitful and Carmarthen regained control.
Carmarthen were pushing high, hoping for another goal. After a real team effort to keep the ball in their attacking third, another short corner was awarded to Carmarthen. Knuckles injected the ball and picked up a deflection on the post to make the score 5-2.
Carmarthen kept the pressure on Cardiff earning yet another short corner, a shot from Richards with a deflection from Morgan meant the match ended 6-2.
Man of the match was awarded to Lili Church for her persistent efforts to win back possession, control the play and distribute the ball to her team mates.
Carmarthen 2XI have a break next weekend before their match against Whitchurch Saints 6XI on March 21st.
