On a rainy Saturday morning on 23rd November, Carmarthen 2XI travelled to Cardiff to play against Whitchurch Saints 6XI in a league match.
Both teams started strong but with the great performances by Midfielders Anna Heath, Rhian Moremon, Kate Howell and Mirain Morgan it gave Carmarthen the start they needed. Charlotte Harries and Bethany James had great breaks through the Saints defenders but with such a great goalie they couldn’t quite get the ball in. Saints attackers put pressure on defenders Nia Sutton, Marianne Spratt and Kate Williams. Unfortunately it went to a short corner but with pressure from Carmarthen and goal keeper Lowri Davies, the ball went straight back up the pitch to the midfielders to break through. Tirion Evans performed well on the wing to get around the Saints defence which lead to Carmarthen being awarded with a short corner. With the short corner being stopped on the line by a Saint defenders foot, Anna Heath was unlucky not to get the penalty flick in.
The score after the first half was 0-0 and Carmarthen were hungry for a goal. With great determination and great pass between Williams and Howell, Evans got the chance to get around the goalie and reward Carmarthen with a goal, 1-0. Whitchurch Saints were desperate for a goal and attacked hard but with great defence by the Lilli Church blocking the ball in the press, the ball went straight back to Thaia Davies who drove the ball around and into the to the D threatening another goal for Carmarthen.
Whitchurch Saints were awarded with some short corners but with great defence from Kate Williams, Anna Heath, Nia Sutton and Marianne Spratt their play was dead.
The score at the end of the game was 1-0 to Carmarthen 2XI.
Carmarthen awarded their man of the match to Anna Heath for her determination and her great attacking and defensive skill giving Carmarthen breaks through Saints’ defence.
Whitchurch Saints awarded Tirion Evans as the man of the match for her ability to use the wings and control the ball making breaks throughout the game and her late 2nd half goal.
Carmarthen will train hard this week for their SWL Cup game against Cardiff Medics 3rd’s next Sunday.
