On Saturday 8th February, Carmarthen 2XI welcomed Whitchurch Valleys to play in their first encounter of the season.
Carmarthen started with means, and stormed up the pitch towards Valleys ‘D’ where they played some lovely balls into the ‘D’ to test the goalie and their defence from the beginning. After a few shots and some play on the P spot, Mirain Morgan managed to slot the ball passed the goalie and reward Carmarthen with their first goal. Carmarthen carried play with mean, passing between midfields Lili Church and Lucy Davies to work their way up the pitch.
The defence came under pressure with a quick hit from Valleys to their forwards where the score became 1-1. Carmarthen were now determined and did not let this effect them, they kept calm and did not let the other teams attitude bring them down.
They started playing their own hockey not influenced by the Valley’s players. Play went up and down the pitch with Carmarthen constantly pressuring the Valleys defence, these were awarded when Siriol Richards scored followed by another goal from Mirain 2 minutes later, 3-1.
An inspiring half time team talk from the coaches pushed Carmarthen to keep pushing and playing well. Kate Howell, Mari Davies and Tirion Evans worked tirelessly in wingback to keep the ball pushing up the pitch which resulted in a ball to Ffion Wyn Jones who smashed the ball passed the keeper. 4-1.
Carmarthen’s defence came under pressure during the second half, with Kate Williams, Marianne Spratt, Leia Thomas and Ellie Routley working well with keeper Lowri Davies to keep the ball out the goal and push play up the pitch. With great work through the middle, and forwards Charlotte Harries, Ffion Wyn Jones, Mirain Morgan and Siriol Richards playing the ball well in the D, Jones slotted her 2nd passed the keeper. 5-1.
Carmarthen now more eager than ever played some lovely hockey up the pitch, keeping calm and keeping possession to earn a well-rewarded 6th goal. Leaving the final score 6-1.
Man of the match from Carmarthen was awarded to Mari Davies for ability to create a lot of promising play down the wing during the game.
Man of the match from Valleys was awarded to Lili Church for her strength in centre midfield to support the forwards constantly whilst under attack through the game.
Carmarthen 2XI will now train hard for a double header weekend against top of the league Cardiff Uni, and Valleys away for the second encounter of the season!
