Carmarthen 2XI v Swansea 6XI
On a wet and windy Saturday 26th October, Carmarthen 2XI travelled to play Swansea University 6XI.
Both teams got off to a good start but Carmarthen soon had the upper hand. Some excellent displays of teamwork in the midfield with quick '1-2s' by Kate Howell, Carys Thomas, Rhian Moremon and Mari Davies gave Carmarthen the breaks they needed, making brilliant use of the wings to get the ball up the pitch and into the attacking 'D'. It wasn’t long until Carmarthen were threatening a goal by using great determination to build up play which allowed Siriol Richards to strike a ball in the back of the net to get Carmarthen ahead early on, 1-0.
Spurred on by the fantastic start, a fired-up Carmarthen side were quick to add a second goal where they started to pick up the speed of their play and attack fast into Swansea’s ‘D’. A clearance from the Swansea defenders was picked up by Captain Charlotte Harries at the top of the 'D' and struck home to make it 2-0.
By this point in the game Carmarthen were on fire whilst keeping the ball in Swansea’s half by composing a solid press. Carmarthen moved up and down the pitch as a unit, supporting each other well, always trying to give each other plenty of options so it wasn't long before a third goal was scored. Carmarthen’s centre midfields Carys Thomas and Kate Howell kept structure of play to allow some more great build up play by forwards, Siriol Richards, Thaia Davies, Tirion Evans and Captain Harries, a quick tap-in from Mari Davies on the post gave Carmarthen a 3-0 advantage. The first half ended 3-0.
Carmarthen's form continued into the second half, Swansea had stepped up their game, but Carmarthen were unphased and continued to dictate play. Carmarthen started to use the width of the pitch even more in the second half which created a lot more opportunities for the young side. Carmarthen kept putting constant pressure on Swansea’s defence which was rewarded when a deflected ball found Phebe Burton on the p spot who calmly slotted away Carmarthen’s 4th goal in her debut performance. Carmarthen's press proved very effective yet again in the 2nd half and denied Swansea many opportunities, however, Swansea were eventually awarded a penalty corner and, despite Carmarthen's best efforts, managed to score, making the game 3-1. With solid defence from Marianne Spratt, Ellie Routley and Isabel Lavery and some great saves by goalkeeper Sophie Nix, Carmarthen held Swansea to one goal and so the match finished 4-1.
The match was a great display of teamwork and determination, with Carmarthen showing real hunger for the ball and impressive physicality. The Carmarthen 2XI will continue to work hard and hope that this match is a sign of great things to come this season!
Swansea awarded their Man of the Match to Tirion Evans for her sheer determination and high work ethics throughout the game.
Carmarthen awarded their Man Of The Match to Phebe Burton for an incredible 2XI debut, including her great second-half goal.
Carmarthen 2XI's next match will be a home game on Saturday 2nd November vs. Cardiff Uni 5XI.
