Carmarthen 2XI v Cardiff Medics 3XI
On Sunday 29th September a young Carmarthen team travelled to Cardiff to play Cardiff Medics 3rd’s in the first round of the South Wales Cup/Plate. It was an important game for Carmarthen as it would determine whether they were able to compete in the cup or plate, so it was important for them to bring home the win.
The team started strong with Carmarthen determined to push the Medics defence early on in the first half. Carmarthen used the youth in their team to work around the Medics players. Lucy Davies, Lili Church and Mirain Morgan worked well together in the middle, passing the ball to eliminate players and get the ball into the D. They were able to find the stick of many of the their forwards, including Thaia Davies on the post who was unlucky to not get a touch on the ball. A pass from Heledd Hunt into the D hit the foot of one of the medics defenders and a short corner was awarded to Carmarthen. A strong injection from Lucy Davies to Kate Howell resulted in Howell sweeping the ball towards the goal and then a deflection from Lucy made the score 1-0 to Carmarthen. This goal was a confidence boost for the whole team and Carmarthen were eager to find the back of the net again.
Medics started strong, determined to get a goal back but the Carmarthen defenders Leia Thomas, Nia Sutton, Marianne Spratt and Elinor Routley were able to hold their ground and deny them of a goal along with goalie Deryn Cressey-Rodgers, who made sure Carmarthen didn’t concede any goals. Mari Davies used her speed to drive down the wing and found the stick of Charlotte Harries at the top of the D who was then able to strike the ball into the goal, making it 2-0.
After a positive team talk at half time the team were eager to start the second half with the same determination as the first half. The second half started with Kate Howell and Heledd Hunt working well on the wings pushing up and back with play. Within 6 minutes of the first half Carmarthen scored another 3 goals. The first goal came from Siriol Richards dribbling the ball past a number of Medics players into the D and hitting the ball past the medics goalie into the goal, 3-0. Moments later, play built up from the defence to the midfield using 1,2s to get the ball past the opposition. Richards once again carried the ball into the D and had a shot at goal, Sara Evans was there to deflect the ball into the goal, 4-0.
The 5th goal came from a pass from Mirain Morgan to Charlotte Harries in the D, meaning that Harries was able to lift the ball into the back of the net, 5-0.
By scoring 3 goals in the first 6 minutes of the second half, the team proved how much determination they have to dig deep and work hard for each other, the start of a very promising season.
Mari Davies was awarded man of the match from Carmarthen for her excellent performance in the wingback position throughout the game, being a key player in both attack and defence, as well as her excellent work ethic throughout the game. Also, Mirain Morgan was praised for an outstanding 2XI debut.
Next week Carmarthen 2XI kicked start their league with a home game against Risca 1st’s.
